A Study on the Factors Influencing the Compliance of Breast Self-Examination
Baek Myeong

Abstract
This study has been done for the purpose of investigating the factors influencing the compliance of breast self-examination for early detection of breast cancer.
The subjects of study were 99 women who visited the N Hospital breast clinic and maternal health center in Kwang Ju city for breast examination without breast cancer or tumor.
The data were gathered from July 8 to August 30, 1996 by questionnaires.
The data was analysed by the use of t-test, ANOVA, Pearson¡¯s correlation coefficients and stepwise multiple regression.
The results of this study were summarized as follows.
1. Each mean score of knowledge and total health beliefs was 3.2 and 27.8. Each mean score of 4 Health beliefs tended to show higher degrees in order of benefit(13.0), susceptibility(11.9), severity(11.9), and barrier(9.1). Each mean score of cues to action and self-esteem was 4.9 and 29.6. Each mean score of 3 Health locus of control tended to show higher degrees in order of internal locus of control(23.5), powerful locus of control(20.9), and chance locus of control(16.2).
2. The mean score of breast self-examination compliance was 11.0 and was not significantly different depending on the general characteristics.
3. The compliance degree of breast self-examination showed a positive correlation with knowledge(r=.45, p=.000), health beliefs(r=.20, p=.045), and cues to action(r=.44, p=.000), but a inverse correlation with barrier(r=-.26, p=.008)
4. By using stepwise multiple regression analysis it was determined that main influencing factors on the degree of breast self-examination compliance were ¡¯internal cue¡¯(24.1%) and ¡¯knowledge¡¯(12.0%). These variables made it possible to explain 36.1% of variance in compliance of breast self-examination.
